18th November 2025

To be sold on 5th December 2025 by instruction from Jacqueline's brother Piers du Pré and sister Hilary Finzi

To include personal effects and rare recordings etc.

Jackie's turquoise dress was worn at a number of her concerts, yet possibly the most important
was the Tribute Concert to the Brave people of Czechoslovakia, held at the Royal Albert Hall on the
2nd September 1968, days after the Soviet and Warsaw Pact invasion of the country.

Organised in just five days by Daniel Barenboim and the London Symphony Orchestra, the concert aimed to raise relief funds for the Czech people. The event
featured Jacqueline du Pré performing Dvorak's Cello Concerto, with Barenboim conducting. This performance was significant not only for its musical excellence but also for its political context, as it was a powerful act of solidarity with the oppressed population.

The concert took place during the day to accommodate the BBC Proms scheduled that night.

Both Jacqueline and Daniel received death threats where they performed, shortly before going on stage. They took no notice of them.

They will also be selling the disc given to them by the BBC which, unlike the recently discovered film of the concert, includes the engineer's and commentator's sound checks, the national anthems, and Daniel reading the many tributes sent by world leaders. No other complete recording of this concert is known to exist.

Gardiner Houlgate are honoured to be able to bring this fantastic piece of history to auction.
